In addition to representing a sociological paradigm, Riecine has also managed to establish itself as one of the best enological expressions of the Gaiole in Chianti subzone, where quality and a sense of a territory are decidedly at home. Lana Frank has owned this estate since 2011. She has been busy revising its overall structure and has directed it back along a path more fitting with its reputation as a leader in Chianti Classico. The winery uses only organic viticulture followed by aging in concrete vats and small and medium wood barrels.The producer’s style, especially in recent times, has become so clear and distinctive as to serve as a model. The Chianti Classico ‘18 is such a striking and beautiful wine. It delivers a very special fresh and sapid profile. The 2018 features fragrant fruit that crosses subtly smoky hints, spices and slightly earthy hints. In the mouth it’s so vibrant: balanced, juicy and very refreshing. The finish is redolent of flowers and small forrest fruits. It’s such a food-friendly wine. It could easily pair so many recipes, but we warmly suggest you to go for a bruschetta (rather rustic bread) with a slow cooked meat ragù, a round of black pepper and some intense Tuscan extra-virgin olive oil on the top. VIEW>

CORRIERE DELLA SERA – I Migliori 100 Vini e Vignaioli d’Italia 2021 – Un Sangiovese puro e vibrante, intenso e speziato, quello di Riecine, anche nella versione 2018. Antinterventismo in vigna, in cantina avvedutissimo: un passaggio in barrique mai eccessivo, naso di liquerizia, poi sottobosco, mora e lampone. In bocca è vellutato, generoso,di enorme, e sorprendente persistenza.   97+ points. VIEW>

WINESCRITIC – Vivo e disteso al naso offre note gentili di fiori rossi, fiori bianchi e fiori di arancio. Sottile la presenza delle ciliegie disidratate in sottofondo. ERGENTILI – Chianti Classico – Non ricordo di essere mai stato deluso dal Chianti Classico di Riecine (e non credo di avere perso la memoria), tuttavia la prova dell’annata 2018 è andata anche oltre le mie aspettative. Un segnale deciso, per la verità, lo avevo già ricevuto in occasione delle anteprime toscane dello scorso febbraio ma, anche se solo a distanza di pochi mesi da quell’assaggio, la conferma è stata così perentoria da suscitarmi comunque un sentimento di ragionevole ammirazione. Equilibrio magnifico, finezza e carattere, bevibilità non disgiunta da un tocco di complessità sono solo gli aspetti più evidenti di questa eccellente bottiglia. Se avete un debole per i “Gallo Nero” e per il sangiovese non fatevelo scappare. Se, al contrario, non amate particolarmente il genere ma non siete ostaggio di pregiudizi, iniziate con questo Riecine 2018: non è mai troppo tardi. VIEW>

DECANTER – Chianti Classico Collection 2020 – With various vineyards scattered throughout Gaiole-in-Chianti, Riecine concentrates solely on Sangiovese for its Chianti Classico. The annata is a blend of sites all between 450 to 500 metres above sea level. This takes some time in the glass to focus. As it opens up, it reveals fresh mint, tarragon and green tea. This palate is bright and candid with Sangiovese’s finely powdered tannins lightly dusting youthful red berries. Drinking Window 2020 – 2024 89 points. VIEW>

GARDINI NOTES – Chianti Classico, Riserva and Gran Selezione, Organic aims followed both in vineyard and in winery. Manual grape harvest, then, eighteen months in barrique. When tasted, the nose displays firmness with aromas of violet petals and alcohol-infused cherries, a touch of juniper. Sharpness in the mouth: juicy, very clear and extremely elegant. 99 points. VIEW>

LUCIANO PIGNATARO – Chianti Classico Collection 2020 – Profumo reattivo raffinato viscerale, agrume rosso maturo, corbezzolo, lamponi fragoline di bosco, pietra,  ferro, mentolo, resina…ma non ho mai capito come fosse il palato perché l’ho  bevuto non solo al primo, ma anche al secondo assaggio. Travolgente meglio dire cosi per non fare brutte figure. (fotonico). VIEW>

DECANTER – Chianti Classico New Releases Tasting – Tasting score 91 –  Owned by Lana Frank since 2011, Riecine is a collection of eight high-altitude, organically farmed vineyards. Yields are always kept low – around 30-35 quintali per hectare. The difference in 2017 is that the estate didn’t need to green harvest to achieve these. Perfumed floral and moss notes join pure red forest berries. The palate allies appropriate density of fruit with a lightness of texture. Winemaker Alessandro Campatelli has also managed to achieve finessed tannins and succulent acidity. Drinking Window 2019 – 2024. VIEW>

Not like any Chianti Classico I have encountered before. Red cherry, freshness but very light on its feet – such delicacy. Much more density than I expected on the palate. Fragrantly fresh, recognisably Sangiovese but so elegant. Very supple and silky across the palate yet finished dry.

Sugli scenografici rilievi collinari di Gaiole, Riecine possiede vigne bellissime, che poche altre aziende del Chianti Classico possono vantare. Da qui nascono non a caso i rossi forse più completi e longevi di tutta la denominazione. Venerabili bottiglie de La Gioia e del Chianti Classico degli anni 80 sono ancora oggi vitali e straordinariamente espressive.

Incredibile come un vino di una annata calda e difficoltosa riesca a proporre una fisionomia così raffinata: è evidente che l’altitudine dei vigneti, attorno ai 400 metri, unita alla mano di Sean e al terroir di Riecine danno qualcosa in più. Non coloratissimo ma di notevole brillantezza, da scuola di sangiovese ai profumi (viola), fresco e voluminoso e contemporaneamente dolce nel tannino al palato. Grande ritmo e grande scioltezza. Il meglio di un Chianti Classico giovane: fragrante e territoriale, ma di beva straordinaria.

A wine with fresh fruit and chocolate, berry and juicy character. Lovely undertones of sliced orange. Long. Intense. (April 5th, 2013) “This 100% Sangiovese hails from the organically farmed 30 hectare Riecine estate located Gaiole in Chianti. Here the rocky quartz and clay soils, farmed meticulously by hand, yield fruit with intensity and depth. Reicine also implements some biodynamic treatments and believes in slow, natural yeast fermentation; this enhances Sangiovese’s natural spicy red fruit aromas and flavors and distinctive earthy character. For the Classico, a portion of the fruit ferments in small open vat lots with the balance in stainless steel, followed by aging for twelve to eighteen months in barrel. This is a lovely, medium-bodied Chianti with spicy red cherry and black plum aromas and flavors accented by cedar and earth spices. It’s got just the right balance of fruit and tannin to pair well with a variety of foods. For a classic Tuscan pairing, try it with pappardelle with boar ragu! ”

Se nel vino precedente si sentiva il varietale del sangiovese in modo didattico, qui a prevalere è il territorio: il floreale è attorniato dalla nota di pasta di mandorle tipica della zona. Lievemente più corposo al palato, ma con un tannino appena ruvido. A detta di Sean si tratta di un vino lievemente inferiore al 2011, a mio modesto parere quello che questo 2010 perde in finezza lo acquista in grinta. Eccellente.

DECANTER – Chianti Classico New Releases Tasting – Crafted from Riecine’s Gittori vineyard in the commune of Gaiole-in-Chianti, this south-facing, terraced slope sits at 500 metres above sea level and was planted in 1971. After a natural cold maceration, the must ferments spontaneously with indigenous yeasts and is then aged in large casks. This wine is elegantly composed and fragrant, with a distinct earthy, fresh herb and stone personality. You can smell the potential and structure to this wine with dried mushroom, bark, dried cherry and berry aromas. Full body, firm and chewy tannins, yet this turns soft and fresh. Succulent and beautiful. A drink-me wine. This is foot todden before undergoing a long period of maceration and 2 1⁄2 years in old oak casks and barrels. Better in 2017 but a fabulous wine already. Pure sangiovese.

This is 100% Sangiovese, and it’s the second vintage of this wine : no new oak, foot trodden, old vines. Lovely sweet nose of cherries plums and spices. Powerful and structured but with elegance too. Very spicy and savoury nut with a sweetness to the cherry and plum fruit, finishing grippy and structured. Classic Sangiovese : structured, livelky, with real presence and power. This drank well over three successive evenings.

Mid ruby. Essence of medium-bodied, tangy Sangiovese without even a hint of an international variety. Marked acidity and light tannins. No suggestion of heat at all. Super digestible and refreshing though some may seek more flesh. (April 2015)

The winemaker’s dream was to make a sangiovese in a Burgundy style, hence the Burgundy bottle. Amazing aromas of flowers and strawberry fruit. Full body with a lovely texture of ripe, silky tannins. Almost powdery texture. Full-bodied but agile and refined, with a gorgeous berry and cherry finish featuring just a hint of acidity. Single-vineyard wine. About 2 1⁄2 years in used barrels and casks. 6,000 bottles made. Best wine ever from here. Drink now or hold.

Riecine IGT 2010 – Toscana IGT: 95+ Punteggio
Questo ‘Riecine’ sostituisce, a partire dalla annata 2010, il Chianti Classico riserva, e costituisce un po’ la risposta aziendale alla Gran Selezione della quale si parlava prima. Il vino è strepitoso: se la complessità infatti è tutta da costruire (ma attendete fiduciosi), il frutto è di una purezza e l’intelaiatura tannica talmente fine e diffusa da ricordare uno Chambolle di Roumier. Palato proprio borgognone: sciolto e oltremodo profumato (agrumi, viole, karkadè, lieve affumicato). Migliorerà certamente, e diventerà con ogni probabilità un vino di valore assoluto. Ma è già magnifico.

ERNESTO GENTILI – Ernestogentili.it – Chi ama il Sangiovese a Riecine ha solo l’imbarazzo della scelta: quattro etichette in rappresentanza di tre annate che convergono nel confermare una qualità eccellente e diffusa su tutta la gamma aziendale. Poco da aggiungere, se non che la versione 2016 del La Gioia è semplicemente strepitosa e che è avvertibile, soprattutto nei due Chianti Classico (2018 e 2017), il segno di un lieve aggiustamento di rotta stilistico – non un’inversione a U – magari provocato e suggerito dalle caratteristiche delle annate in gioco: maggiore presenza estrattiva, più contrasto, tono e ricchezza di frutto che nel passato. Gli effetti sembrano essere assai confortanti per noi, oltre che rassicuranti per i tanti appassionati della cantina di Gaiole. VIEW>

Off the bat, the wine shows a specific mineral note that reminds me of black stone or dusty granite. Beyond that, you get a thick and dense layer of black fruit and plum. The wine is never heavy or flat, instead it shows a lot of energy and freshness with a point of spiciness on the close. That energy is typical of Gaiole in Chianti. This is a medium-to-full bodied Sangiovese with all its various moving parts in harmony, ready for a Tuscan bean and tomato stew with fresh bread and healthy wedges of pecorino.
